Turning Grief Into Strength: The Story Behind Gloves for Grief
Grief is a universal experience that transcends socioeconomic boundaries, affecting every single one of us at some point in our lives. While poverty impacts 10-12% of the population, the pain of loss and death touches us all. This shared reality makes organizations like Gloves for Grief profoundly relevant and necessary.
Founded from a deeply personal tragedy, Gloves for Grief provides a unique and healing approach to navigating the weight of loss. It’s not just a nonprofit; it’s a movement to normalize conversations around grief, build supportive communities, and offer healthy outlets for the pain that can feel all-consuming.
A Mission Born from Loss
Gloves for Grief was born from a devastating personal experience. Its founder, during a full-term pregnancy, lost her baby in utero. The crushing weight of that grief and frustration left her yearning for an outlet. She felt an overwhelming urge to hit something, to release her emotions physically, but also to find a community that could understand her pain. Out of this need, Gloves for Grief came to life.
In her own words: “I actually lost my son, Weston, two and a half years ago, four days before my due date. I didn’t know what to do with the weight of my grief. I didn’t know anyone else who had been through what I had been through. The first year was just survival mode. I felt compelled to share my story and help others navigate and work through their grief.”
Her first event in February 2023, held at Box House, attracted just seven people. Fast forward a year and a half, and Gloves for Grief has hosted 14 events, serving 756 individuals. This rapid growth underscores the burning need for grief support and a safe space where people can share their stories, honor their loved ones, and find healing.
The Power of Community
Through Gloves for Grief, attendees find solidarity and understanding. “As painful as it is to talk about the loss of my son, I love to talk about him,” the founder shares. “Giving people that space is truly an honor for us and this whole organization.”
Her partner in the nonprofit, Ashley, also brings her story of loss. After losing her son, Zane, at 20 weeks of pregnancy, she struggled with the stark contrast between the joy in her maternity photos and the heartbreak that followed. For her, Gloves for Grief represents a way to rediscover joy, even in the smallest moments, and to ensure that others feel seen and validated in their grief.
The Unique Healing Approach
What makes Gloves for Grief stand out is its combination of physical outlets and emotional connection. Participants engage in activities like boxing, which allows them to channel the anger and frustration often associated with grief into something healthy and cathartic.
At the same time, the organization fosters a supportive community, where people can connect with others who have shared similar experiences. This dual approach—physical release and emotional support—is transformative for many participants.
Leveraging Social Media for Impact
Social media plays a crucial role in spreading the word about Gloves for Grief. The organization’s Instagram account has been a lifeline for many families searching for support and connection. This digital presence is essential for nonprofit success in today’s world, allowing Gloves for Grief to reach people far beyond their immediate community.
However, as with many nonprofits, funding remains a challenge. Unlike for-profit ventures, nonprofits like Gloves for Grief must make an immediate impact to survive and grow. Building a sustainable financial foundation is critical to ensuring they can continue their mission.
The Bigger Picture
Gloves for Grief is more than an organization—it’s a lifeline for those navigating the isolating journey of grief. By blending physical activity with emotional support, they’ve created a space where people can heal and honor their loved ones.
For anyone experiencing grief, or for those who know someone who is, Gloves for Grief offers a powerful reminder: You are not alone. Your grief matters, your story matters, and your loved ones matter.
